Treatment for Teens and Young Adults

All our therapists have extensive experience working with teens and young adults, including the use of Art Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral interventions, Motivational Interviewing, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). 

We are used to working with other professionals as needed (e.g., physicians, psychologists, occupational therapists, teachers) to fully understand an issue, determine the most accurate diagnosis, formulate the​ most effective treatment, and address each young person’s needs comprehensively. We also appreciate the intense challenges faced by Moms and Dads and offer parenting support and guidance as needed. ​

​​Issues that we treat include the following: Impulsivity, ADHD/Asperger’s Disorder, Behavior Management, Grief and Loss,
Attachment Issues, ​Adoption, Trauma Recovery, Sexual Reactivity, Defiance, Excessive Fears and Anxiety, Depression,
​Substance Abuse, and Effective Parenting Strategies​.
We believe that healthy sexual development and an age-appropriate, non-shaming development of sexual values and behavior is the right of
every child.

Children and adolescents are naturally curious, and they have a healthy need to explore, individuate, and establish their own identities. Unfortunately, many children are being introduced
to cyberspace before they are psychologically capable of assessing and processing what they are being exposed to. Kids as young as four years old are competent with technology, but they are not aware of the risks or potential consequences of developing online relationships or accessing content that is violent and sexually graphic. Children can be traumatized if exposed to extreme content, resulting in anxiety, depression, and other significant disorders. ​
Teenagers are most vulnerable to addiction as their brains are growing.

By its nature, the internet provides intense levels of stimulation and powerful reward. Children and teens repeatedly return, seeking endless novelty and new levels of excitement. Many researchers are now using the term “arousal addictions” to refer to the compulsive use of social media, gaming, and pornography.
​
This can cause a digital rewiring of brains to need novelty, excitement, and constant arousal. Children and teens can be left out of sync in traditional classroom or romantic relationships.
