THERE IS A SOLUTION — YOU DON'T HAVE TO LIVE WITH FEAR AND ANXIETY.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence based, effective technique to approach life issues causing difficulty or distress. It is especially helpful in treating deep trauma held in the midbrain. This method is designed to facilitate the mind’s own natural capabilities to learn and function better. When using EMDR, the focus is always on the particular problem identified by the client. The client only discloses what he or she needs to in order to address the targeted issue. The therapist’s role is to facilitate the client’s own process of working through an issue and reducing distress while improving functioning. Life gets better.
To illustrate how it works, here is a short, hypothetical case example: Joanne experienced significant anxiety, including panic attacks, whenever she was required to make a professional presentation as part of her job. Her overall work performance was suffering due to her worry. Her attempts to avoid speaking to groups were noted by her supervisors and had become a serious problem. Her symptoms also appeared to be worsening. Joanne met with a therapist and learned ways to calm and ground herself. Using EMDR, she examined her experience at work, noticing related thoughts, feelings and body sensations. She then explored other times she had similar experiences to create a ‘target’ memory that could be reprocessed and worked through. After several sessions, Joanne’s fear and anxiety in the present was greatly reduced. The therapist then worked with Joanne to integrate more positive and realistic thoughts and feelings around making professional presentations. Today, Joanne can make presentations without experiencing panic attacks or other symptoms of worry. Her initial issue has been resolved and Joanne may end treatment or work on other areas of her life as she so chooses.
